applicants applying for clerical vacancies; 1020 have been
registered but so far it has been possible to employ less than
10% in Govt. Depts. The majority of ex-Government clerks of
the permanent staff has been employed.
7.
PRINTING.
Government requirements have been fairly adequately met, the
work being distributed among the various printing establishments
in the Colony. It is hoped shortly to re-establish the firm of
Govt. Printers.
There are ample stocks of printing paper, enough to last three
months, but there is a shortage of most other material, such as
lined paper, printing ink, type, automatic numbering machines,
roller composition, linotype metal and matrices and ivory, pulp,
index and straw boards.
8.
AIR SERVICES.
To date, the only member of the staff to arrive in Hongkong
is the S.0.1.
(a) Kai Tak. All buildings for Civil Aviation were removed
by the Japanese during reconstruction of the airfield.
The question of temporary premises is under negotiation.
Arrangements have been made with No.201, Staging Post,
Transport Command to handle Civilian passengers and
freight. This Dept. will attach personnel to assist as
they become available. Transport for civil passengers has
been provided by the Military Administration.
(b)Ping Shan Airfield. Air Ministry has given approval to the
construction of a runway 2,000 yards by 50 yards, but this
is considered inadequate even as a temporary measure if the
